The Pensioner Paradox

The two types of retirees

Share

My father retired after a long career in law enforcement and government work. He has two pensions from the government. He’s never once worried about the market, sequence of returns risk, or withdrawal rates. He just gets his paychecks every month.

Most retirees nowadays have more money than my father does — and way more stress.

The Two Types of Retirees

I think about the contrast in terms of two general concepts of retiree: the pensioner and the self-funded retiree. Here’s what each one looks like:

The Pensioner

  • Thinks: “I get $4,500 a month no matter what.”
  • Behavior: Spends confidently, rarely checks markets
  • Emotional state is calm
  • Paradox: Often has LESS total wealth
The Pensioner sleeps soundly at night

The Self-Funded Retiree

  • Thinks: “I have $1.8M, but what if the market crashes?”
  • Behavior: Obsessively tracks portfolio, underspends
  • Emotional state is anxious
  • Paradox: Often has MORE total wealth
The Self-Funded Retiree is anxious looking at the market

Structure Matters More than Size

Here’s the core truth as best as I can see it: A pension isn’t valuable because it’s a huge pile of money. It’s valuable because it’s a system that removes decisions and transfers risk.

The pensioner never has to ask:

“How much can I safely withdraw this year?”

“What if I live to be 95 or 100?”

“What if the market crashes the year I retire?”

“Should I rebalance after this downturn?”

“Did I withdraw too much last year?”

These questions don’t exist in the pensioner’s world. Not because the pensioner is smarter or wealthier, but because the structure answered all of them in advance.

When you think about it, the pensioner has outsourced the three main risks of retirement planning: longevity risk, market risk, and sequence of returns risk. With all of those taken care of, much of his or her uncertainty about the future melts away.

Let me know your thoughts on this, and whether you think a deep dive into the pensioner vs. self-funded retiree concept might be interesting.

Thanks for reading, and remember:

Retirement isn’t about dying with the biggest balance, it’s about living with the greatest peace of mind.
